Ann Altstatt / maker/finder of things

I think of the art I make as lying at the intersection of mysticism and scientific inquiry, exploring where they compliment and contradict. I present personal creation/destruction myths next to studies of trash off the floor of the Bargain Barn in an attempt to level the playing field of importance. Many of these images are in some way fragments of a larger whole– some are dreams, some are jokes, some are portraits of the forgotten or unseen, and all describe something that is just beyond my ability to see or say: the meeting point of the big joy and the big sadness.

In addition to my training as a lithographer, I have pursued studies in Geology and Science Illustration, and currently sell organic vegetables for a farm while I'm not teaching sewing and bicyle repair.
